We’ve all heard the saying, “Sleep tight. Don’t let the bed bugs bite.”, but it’s becoming all too real lately. Infestations from bed bugs are on the rise in the U.S., and these little critters are a nasty bunch who make their home in beds and soft furnishings where they come out typically at night to bite you and feed on your blood. Bed bugs are different from dust mites, although both can be making their home in your bed. Dust mites don’t bit you, but they do cause allergy symptoms whereas bed bugs do not. Encasings can protect you from both bed bugs and dust mites, if you get pillow encasings and mattress encasings that have been tested and provent to provide allergy and bed bug protection. Even if you’re only looking for allergy relief from dust mites, the additional bed bug protection is an added bonus to keep these pesky bugs from invading your bed.

If you want more information about bed bugs, make sure to read our bed bug article here in the Allergy Learning Center. It will help you to understand more about bed bugs and what protection encasings can provide.

At ACP our wish for you is a healthy new year. And whether you’re trying to ward off catching the bug going around the school or office or you’re already feeling under the weather, we’ve got some top recommendations for finding relief.

Sinus Rinses: Nasal and sinus irrigation has been around for thousands of years and many of us probably didn’t think much about it until Dr. Oz demonstrated the Neti Pot on Oprah a while back. Using a saline sinus rinse can help flush out allergens, bacteria, mucus, viruses and more for a healthy preventative tool and for soothing relief when you’re suffering from a cold, congestion or sinusitis.

Face Mask: A face mask can be really helpful, especially if you choose a mask such as the AllergyZone N95 mask which is certified by the Center for Disease Control and was a recommended mask for protection from SARS. If you saw Dancing with the Stars during this fall 2009 season when the celebs and dancers were coming down with the flu, they were wearing masks when practicing and none of the partners seemed to get sick.

Humidifers and Steam Inhalers: If the cold and cough have started up, a humidifier and/or a steam inhaler will give you soothing relief for dry airway passages. A humidifier will help alleviate dryness in a room, whereas a steam inhaler can be good for personalized steam therapy to soothe the throat and help reduce congestion. Some steam inhalers include medicated pads to release menthol or eucalyptus vapors for added relief.

Remember to wash hands frequently as the best way to ward off exposures to germs and viruses!

I needed to better control the horrible allergies my kids were facing and, at the same time, stop spending ridiculous money on all the drugs that are being prescribed or pushed at my children! I decided the best way to stop the madness was to simply avoid the things that trigger my kid’s allergy symptoms, so that they don’t even need to take any medicine in the first place. For my kids the triggers include just about everything. That means those charming dust mites, all the pet dander, mold and of course whatever is blooming in sunny Southern California. What I found shocking was that my kid’s beds were a big source of irritation because of dust mites and dust mite droppings. And to think of the amount of time my kids are in their beds with that allergic exposure!

So, these disgusting bugs thrive in pillows and mattresses and since you can’t easily wash a pillow or mattress all the time, I learned it is best to encase or trap the dust mites inside by using an allergy proof cover on the bed’s pillow, mattress and box spring. It is the most effective in reducing the exposure and the most cost-effective if you buy a good product. These products are usually either made of vinyl or a semi permeable fabric. But don’t worry, they don’t crinkle anymore like Grandma’s bed.

Now if I could only figure out a way to get them to keep their rooms clean!
